What is BRAC and How will BRAC effect Maryland?
- BRAC stands for Base Realignment and Closure
- BRAC is used to describe the Federal Governments process which is used to reorganized base structure and resources in order to better serve our citizens as well as our dedicated armed forces personnel.
- Our Federal Government determined in 1998 that we had 20-25% more installation capacity than it would need in the future.
- In an effort to consolidate operations to achieve operational efficiency’s they created the BRAC Process.
- Bases in other regions will be closed or their uses transformed and will be moved to Maryland.
- By law, the realignment project must be completed by 2011.
Why Is BRAC important to the Maryland Real Estate Market?
- The BRAC project will bring 22,000 jobs to the local Maryland area over the next 5-7 years.
- The growth will increase demand for housing as well as transportation, education, public safety, and human services.
- The additional growth will contribute to the local Maryland economy by increasing demand for local businesses, real estate, and taxes.
- Along with the positive effects of solid growth comes challenges that need to be planned for. There fore many Tasks Forces have been created to support our local markets.

Sources of BRAC positions to Central Maryland
- BRAC: 5,695 New Jobs to the Ft. Meade and surrounding area.
- NSA: The National Security Agency will add 4,000 New jobs for Central Maryland area.
- EUL, better know as Extended Use Lease will create 10,000 jobs in Maryland.
- Additional Department of Defense growth expected of 2,000 new jobs.
That is a total of 22,000 new jobs expected for the Central Maryland area.
