29th Infantry Division Memorial Highway in Maryland Honors our Veterans

29thDiv

While driving on Rt. 29 just south of Rt. 70 in Ellicott City you may have noticed a large monument in the median. You may not have know that the monument honors the Army’s 29th Infantry Division.

On this day we celebrate and honor all of our Veterans for the sacrifice they have given for our freedom and security. Maryland Veterans have played crucial roles in fighting for our freedom. I thought I would highlight the 29th Infantry Division and share a little history with you.

The 29th Infantry Division has a long history dating back to 1917 and our Civil War era. The division has taken part in some of America’s most important battles in 20th Century. The Division has been called the “Blue and Gray Division” representing units from both the north and south that fought against each other during the Civil War.

World War I: Fought on the Western Front and participated in the Army’s October 1918 Meuse-Argonne offensive which was one of the largest military operations in history. The offensive helped bring an end to war in favor of the Allied Powers.

World War II:The Division hit Omaha Beach on D-Day (June 6) a turning point in the war and the start of Hitlers demise. Many casualties were taken. The Division had a crucial part in the Normandy Campaigns which liberated the city of St. Lo in 1944.

The 29th Division served in many campaigns since the world wars and deserve our deepest respect and honor. So when you drive by the monument in Ellicott City please remember the 29th Infantry Division and all of our Maryland Veterans.

  3. Very cool stuff Scott. The Infantry is a tough crowd. I used to get to hang with them once in a while, given my brother was a grunt. I was a cannon cocker so we normally had 2 or 3 squares a day, but my brother used to pack his gear full of top ramen and any kind of light food to get him through.
